Happy New Year, Jen! I really struggled with the "12 struggling readers" goal. It seems so small, but then when I looked at it as a one-a-month plan, it was easier to swallow. For someone who doesn't like to read, one book would be <I>a lot</I> in 30 days.<BR/><BR/>PS - Did you survive the cold, snow and wind we had to offer here on the East coast?

Thanks everyone for stopping by! Last year I had heard about a classroom substituting films for a live teacher because she was in/out of school recovering from a heart attack. But I didn't realize how much it is being used in other classrooms until recently. I agree - more reading, less media!

I find myself slipping into a Boris Karloff accent for the Grinch when I read it aloud. The book and the old TV special have become totally interwoven in my mind--this is one case where the movie is as good as the book!

It is mystifying to me why this is an age group for books. The difference between a 9 year old (who could be 3rd or 4th grade) and a 12 yr old (7th grade) is huge both in reading ability and in sophistication. If someone could come up with a better age grouping or description I suspect the market would embrace it.

Kathleen - Thanks for stopping by and for adding all of the additional details about Nanuq. I love the idea of adding multi-media to books. It really helps kids connect with reading and learning. We get a lot of books each week, and there are some that just seem to say "hey, look at me." This was definitely one of them.
