Write On!

Some days you get an inbox full of virtual junk mail; other days you get lots of just so-so stuff; and then some days, you get a surprise ... a note from someone you've never met, but who brightens your day all the same.

Yesterday was one of those days. I had a note from Dallas Woodburn, a junior at USC majoring in creative writing. Because Dallas is passionate about kids and reading and writing, she found The Reading Tub, and tooka moment to introduce herself and what she does. Rather than speak for her, I'll let her tell you all about Write On!

Write On! is a nonprofit foundation, that then-8th grader Dallas Woodburn created in 2000, to encourage kids to discover joy, confidence, and a means of self-expression and connection with others through reading and writing. Write On's Holiday Book Drive has collected and donated 8,342 new books to underprivileged kids the past six years, and the goal for 2007 is to see the grand total surpass 10,000 books!

Check out Write On's website (www.zest.net/writeon) for book reviews, author interviews, forums for young writers to share their work, writing contests, and more. "Write On!" also offers two annual scholarships for young writers to attend writing conferences -- see the website for more information.

In the weeks to come (read: as we get closer to the holiday season), you'll hear more about the book drive in this space. Dallas is collecting books to donate to kids who otherwise wouldn't have a book of their own. And since literacy and getting kids excited about reading is what we do here in the Tub, we're happy to help out.
